Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival - 2002 : Running 70+ years Jacob's Pillow is a dance festival held in the Berkshires every summer. I drive out one summer afternoon to see MoMix and just found the experience enchanting. If it weren't a 2 hour drive from Boston I would have gone more frequently.

We took our time and just enjoyed our surroundings. Some snow had fallen the day before and not many people had been on the trail, wonderful.

Columbia National Wildlife Refuge - 2007 : I had to get out of town, so I headed north to Othello, WA. Good place to go in the winter, no rattlesnakes. I took the Frog Lake an Marsh Loop trails. Water setteled in these areas after some irrgation projects started up in the 1930s. Very abundent wildlife, since it's really the only decent amount of water in the area.

Yakima Canyon Ridge : You would never find this trail without someone telling you. As the name implies it follows a ridge along a section of the Canyon Yakima River. I got to the trail late and only had 2 hours, but got some good shots of the sunset. Great views and a nice steady climb. I'll be coming back. Might be a brute in the summer.

Bear Creek Mountain : This is a great hike in the Wenatchee National Forest in Washington state. The grade is pretty low until the last half mile when you make the final accent to the summit. Nice day hike, about 4 hours (7.4 miles). The access road to the trail head is a bit tricky if you don't have a high clearance vehicle, but it is worth the effort.

Wallula Gap : Wallula Gap is a major formation left over from the ice age Missoula floods. You ascend a bluff to 400 feet above the Columbia River. Usually you'd expect the top of such a buff to be flat or starkly contoured, but is not the case. Bare rock faces, hanging coulees, mesa and other formations I don't know the names of are present. It's easy to see how rushing water on top of the of the mesa could have caused the formations.

Maryhill : Samuel Hill was an eccentric millionaire active around the turn of the 20th century. Learning about him a bit it's easy to see that he was a visionary for his time. He fell in love with the Columbia Gorge and established several projects including a WWI monument modeled after Stonehenge and a museum (that was originally to be his "Ranch House"). It's odd to see all of this in the middle of nowhere. The museum is quite nice and features several events during the summer including a sculpture garden.

Horsethief Butte : This is a short trail down the road from the Dalles Mountain trail head (about 14 miles on Route 14 past the Route 97 junction) on the South side if the road. You can see the butte from the road. If you head around the butte to the west and come round the south face the climb is easier. This whole area is ripe with good climbing spots, but the hike itself is very easy. From the top of the butte you have views of Mount Hood to the west.

Fort Simcoe : Fort Simcoe is located in the middle of the Yakama Nation Reservation on state lands after a lovely drive through alfalfa, mint, and hops files. It was constructed 1859 to keep watch over the newly-formed reservation and later served as a school for Yakama Nation children for "reading and writing to trade skills" as the interpretive sign says. The Yakama Cultural Center, near the border of the Reservation, tells a different side of the story stating planing that the tribe's children for forced to attend the school and treated in a manner as do discourage the continuation of their cultural traditions. It's worthwhile to take both views under consideration. Add in the Gothic Revival homes and you can see a glimpse of two worlds trying to co-exist. I'll also note that the only other people at the part when I was there was a Yakama family watching their kids tote around on the juggle-jim and a maintenance worker who appeared to be Nation member himself, times change (for the better in this case I think).
